고맙습니다

Go Map Sam Ni Da = Thank you.

Haven't written in a while so let me think of what I've been up to here..

My buddy Kyle from Indiana left a couple weeks ago to go back home and immediately got engaged once he got off the plane. Nice play, my friend.

I will now be involved with Shinsangwon orphanage every first and third saturday of each month as a part of our church ministry as well as I'll be playing a big part in organizing events there for our church to get involved in. I'm pretty excited about it and love playing with the kids and even teaching them a bit of english. We have a Christmas party on Dec. 12th too.

Every wednesday I've been going to our men's discussion group at a local bar restaurant where each week a different guy will propose a new topic. Tonight's my turn. I chose to talk about Christians who screw up and it's plastered throughout the media and how we deal with that as the body of God's house. I think it'll be a real good topic. So it's not necessarily a bible study, at least I don't see it as that because we already make the time in church and at our homes to study the bible, but not that we don't study what the Word says about the issues we talk about. It obviously will play a big part.

Been pretty sidetracked hardcore on my paintings. I've barely touched them in 2 months! Grrrr.. No one's fault but mine. However lately, I have been trying to make the time to do so. If I keep at it, I know they'll turn out fine, but I also just need to get them done!

Work is going fine, I guess. I'm not much of a teacher still since I've never had training, but I'm trying my best and learning how to increase my effectiveness. Most of the ladies we work with are pretty cool, so it makes it fun.

I also go to a survival Korean class on Saturday mornings at my church which is pretty fun. They go too slow however. Luckily, there are Korean volunteers that help us out and I get to ask extra questions. They say I'm doing really good.

This sunday is our Thanksgiving Feast at church in which we invite people from the community to join.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Later.

see you next time..

Wasn't well enough today to go to Japan. My chest and cough is still bothering me, and I feel fatigued a lot. I'm still taking the day off for holiday, but going to the hospital to pick up some more meds, then hopefully I'm well enough to hang out with my buddy Kyle who came to see us from Indiana last night. He'll be here for a week and a half so it should be a lot of fun. But the sooner I'm healthy, the more I can enjoy it. Thanks for your prayers.

An interesting week..

Wednesday, I was walking around the classroom (with the same butt soccer kids) to check the kids' classwork, then proceeded to sit back down on the floor. Immediately I fell on the floor in pain!

MY BACK KILLED!

I moaned and groaned and grunted on the floor while my kids gasped and stared at me.

"Teachuh! Ow?"

"Yes, Teachuh OW."

"Oh, Teachuh, hospital?"

"Yep! Maybe!"

I slowly and painfully made it out of the classroom to go to the office to see if any other teachers could help me. But there was no one there. I would also feel like an idiot trying to explain myself since this school branch (different school on wednesdays) has teachers that don't speak English very well at all. So I continued to moan and grunt on the floor in the hallway, hoping my kids were doing their work. I could hear them asking each other if they saw me out the window. Now on the floor I tried to make it back to my feet. I couldn't. I could barely straighten myself. But I pulled myself up with a nearby cabinet anyway. I couldn't hardly breathe either. I had 20 minutes left of class so I had to finish. I staggered into the classroom gasping and laid on the floor.

"Teachuh, come here!"

"No. What?"

"Finished!"

"Bring it here."

Anny came over and held her book over my head so that I could check it.
"Ok, this one here, check page...uh..." I struggled to find her story book and thumbed through the pages, "...8. Here."

"Ok." She sat back down to change her answer.

Jimmy: "Teachuh, here." He showed me his phone with "119" dialed and ready to 'send' (No, you're not dyslexic. 119 is 911 here).

"Ah! No, wait. Not yet! Just go finish your work, please."

He continues to stare at me – seemed like he wanted to help me and thought it was weird I was on my back – really concerned.

"Jimmy, go finish your work."

He still stares at me.

"Jimmy, go!" I wave him away.

He finally goes back to his seat to finish. I get through the last few minutes aching and trying to breathe. This is the first time it has ever happened. I give them their homework and send them out the door. It's 5:10pm now, but I have another class @ 7:00pm..."Psh, Not like this." I wait in the office until Betty from the other school comes to pick me up and Nate to take over my last class.

The last few days in sum:
Hospital didn't know anything except how much they want to get paid. I love korean food and how it works wonders on the body. Double check to make sure your floor heater is on because the next morning you'll wake up with a sore throat and become sick, making the next couple days more difficult to do your job and deal with a sore back as well.

Tomorrow, Saturday, I go to my 2nd Korean class and then to my 3rd visit to get acupuncture on my back, which I have 2 huge bruises from. What the heck are they doing to me?! They say it's normal though. Go figure (but the nurses aren't ugly and it's an interesting experience nonetheless – makes for good stories to post on blogs for those who have the unnecessary time.) Then, I'm off to enjoy the rest of my Saturday with a friend; maybe see a movie, eat some awesome korean food, and drink coffee and tea amongst other koreans learning English in an "English club" that meet at a cafe downtown. I suppose it's not too late to brush up on my English as well..

Butt Soccer

Here's a vid of me, "Anny", "Peter", and "Jimmy" that I teach at a different branch. They're pretty rad kids, and smart. I love that Peter sports a nice little mullet. At first, Anny didn't want to play but she seems like she goes nuts over it. They're all pretty excited and they just eat this kinda thing up. We're getting our exercise before class by playing a romping round of Butt Soccer. We use the little tables as the goals. (This is a 5min video but I cut it down so that I could upload it easily.) I think the music I added makes it more fun too. It's "Let the Dominoes Fall" by Rancid.

More Chuseok..

This is a little vid i put together from Chuseok with Cory's family.

Chuseok! ...What?! I don't suck, CHUUUseok!

This weekend is the Korean holiday, similar to Thanksgiving, called Chuseok (choo-suck) – a 3-day harvest festival. Families get together, eat, hang out, whatever.. I'll find out for sure I guess this weekend and tell you how it goes. However, I'm not planning, nor was I invited by any family for the holiday, so I think I most likely may go to Gyeongju, the historical Korean city, and Busan to visit friends maybe.

In other news, next weekend (9,10,11) I was invited by work to go to Jeju...again...for FREE! Amazing...BUT I can't go. That weekend Nate and I have already committed to playing in the worship band for our church's first annual conference at a camping destination an hour away. It should be fun, but I can't believe we have to turn down an all-expenses-paid trip to Jeju!!! Dang it!

Hmm..that's all can think of for now. Haven't been up to much other than painting and hanging with friends. Take care guys. Love you.

Halfway there!

Today is my 6 months in South Korea! I'm not sure how I feel about it exactly...is the cup half full or half empty? I really like it here. I've become comfortable mostly besides not understanding the language. I've made a lot of new friends, experienced interesting things already. Being in this country is also a good middle area between a few exciting countries. I've already visited Taiwan, next is China and Japan. I'd be a dufus not to visit them before March. Who knows where else I might visit.. Anyway, thanks for all the prayers and encouragement over the past several months leading up to this point. I think about you guys all the time. I love you. Take care!

Jejudo!

A kid at our school came down with the Swine Flu, poor guy/girl, and school was cancelled for a few days. So Tipton and I immediately bought a ticket to Jejudo, or Jeju Island, for a last-minute mini-vacation. Jeju is basically Korea's Hawaii.
We stayed in the Shilla Hotel off Jungnam Beach on the south end of the island between the Hyatt and Lotte Hotel. It was a resort area so everything was sooo expensive! We ate an all-you-can eat buffet without realizing the price. Nor did we know at first that it was all-you-eat...$65/plate! woops. But hey, what can ya say when you're on a vacation on a sub-tropical island. Well I guess I could've asked Tipton if he wanted to wash or dry back in the kitchen.
The backyard of the hotel was a beautiful park with palms, pool, jacuzzi, bar, petting zoo, walking paths leading down to the beach, weird animal statues, waterfall, neat white yellow and orange catfish, asian people, russian people among others..
The second day we walked a trail to see a temple, an intricately decorated bridge, and two or three waterfalls. We wanted to see more of the nature stuff like that but didn't have a lot of time, energy, or money since we took this trip before pay day!

Samsung Lions

Went to another Samsung Lions baseball game, but this time with my cam. They killed the Kia Tigers, who are #1 in the league this season, 14-4. crazy. Nate and I initially went to spend time with a group of orphans, but there weren't enough seats for all of the chaperons, so we had to sit a few sections outfield from the kids. It was still fun though.

Taiwan

{Photos here.} (Panoramics will be up soon.)
Ho. Lee. Crap. Taiwan is amazing. Loved it. Compared with S.Korea, the people are much nicer, eager to help you out, and speak much better English. My favorite part of the trip is the people. I wish I could've taken a posse of Taiwanese with me back to Skorea just to have around. I am definitely going back some day. Perhaps to teach!

We spent 4 days there; first day was just chillaxing at our hotel and scoping out the local night market (photo above) in Taoyaun (tou-yane). The second day we decided to have a 'nature' day so we went to the Sandiaoling Falls (southeast of Taipei) – gorgeous. And we got to hang out with the locals in the area that were jammin' to karaoke – probably my favorite part of the trip. The third day we spent in Taipei where we got to go up in the tallest building in the world, the Taipei 101. rad. We then shopped in the very unique Core Pacific Living Mall. Also checked out a couple temples, Longshan and the Confucious Temples. Finally, we ended the day in the famous Shinlin Night Market.. it was ok.

Loved this trip. Can't wait to go back and explore the entire island...and it WILL happen.

A not-so-horrorfest..

Cory, Tipton, and I went to the 6th Annual Horrorfest on Sunday night just on the edge of Daegu where they had a "ghost house" that wasn't very frightening to say the least..and one of the zombies stepped on my toe during his attack. Sheesh. But the area where it was is a park just outside the Daegu soccer stadium so it was really nice to relax and walk around amidst all the locals.

There was also a play going on about a household master seeking a second wife. I got footage of the possible bride-to-be strutting her stuff for the master.

Pohang Fireworks

Saturday, I, Tipton, Cory and his friend he introduced us to a month ago, Becky, all took a small trip back to Pohang to catch some summer fireworks performed by a Korean team as well as a French team. Probably the best shows I've seen. I forgot my camera, so these are photos by Cory. I can't upload any video of the shows because the files are too large – so I'll show you next year! haha.. more pix on flickr of course..

MUDFEST

new photos up on flickr from the Boryeong mudfest last week, plus a few more at the beach on the 4th by Cory.

Mudfest was fun. We got really muddy, but not as much as I thought. It would definitely be something I'd go back to in following years. Our trip began 11p on a Saturday night. It was a 3 hour drive to the public bath house where we stayed the night for about 7 bucks, which included massage area, pool, baths, showers, multi-temperature saunas, restaurant, internet. What sucked though, was that we slept on mats on a hard floor with these plastic brick pillows..uggghhhh. Tipton and I were miserable. We did not sleep. Finally, I got up after a couple hours and hung out in the 80ºC sauna (about 180ºF) and felt a million times better, as well as a -3ºC (ice) room. So then it turned out not to be a total loss after that. Once the team woke up, we all stripped down, got to know each other better and took our showers. We ate a nice Korean breakfast and finally headed to the beach and the festival.

First, we found a spot on the beach to stash our junk and then dipped ourselves in a mud pool. Weird at first and we felt like clay pots in the sun. We all tried our hand at an inflatable game with mud smeared all over it. It was fun sliding around and falling a lot. There were a heap of photographers taking photos mainly of foreigners such as Tipton and I. We were celebs basically, and both foreigners and photographers ate it up. There were other events and games that we didn't come around to experience but we did get to ride down the huge mud slide and got mud in our eyes..ugh. So we dowsed ourselves with salt water in the ocean just a few feet away to get "clean". We ate, swam, and relaxed thereafter, but only to go back to at least get "painted" with mud – yep, different colors. I felt like a kid. We got washed off again, swam more, relaxed more, ate more, went home. Can't wait to go back next year..

Headin' to Taiwan..

Nate and I just booked a trip to Taipei, the capital of Taiwan which is an island off the southeastern coast of China, and southwest of Korea. It's about a 2 hour flight, so it's a decently priced trip including hotel. We'll be there from Aug.1 to the 4th. Don't know what we're gonna do there, but we're excited about it anyway! I'll be sure to take a heap of pictures to post. Love you guys.

The 4th & 13th (bday)

{NEW PIX}
I had a good time celebrating my bday basically the whole weekend. Nothing too special, just went out to eat a lot, had a few drinks, relaxed, did some Karaoke (Noraebang – 노래방 – as they call it here, meaning "song room"), shot some pool, met some nice attractive Korean models who I got to sketch, and received some interesting gifts, and played "Billibow" which is a cool game that mixes pool and bowling together – lotta fun... and I suppose that's about it! Thanks everyone for the bday greetings and whatnot. Miss you all.

Thing I miss of the week ~ v.III

Nature's carpet. There's nothing like takin' a stroll along a lush patch of the green stuff – like walking in a meadow of the world's pudgiest polar bears who previously all had a vicious brawl in a dye factory who subsequently only manufacture the color green. 99% of the surfaces I walk upon are hard floors or hard rock. However, the only thing like grass is...

...ACTUAL CARPET! Shaggy stuff, flat stuff, fake grass, I don't care. At this point, I love all carpet. The only carpet I find in skorea is at the movie theater...which doesn't make much sense to me when I think about it compared to the places it should be! – like my apartment! They haven't even heard of a rug. If I do find a rug here, it's an absolute luxury!

Here is the rug I currently I have gracing my apartment at the side of my bed that I found in the dumpster:

It doesn't have the same effect as most carpets but it jazzes up the place a bit.

Until next time, HAPPY 4th EVERYONE!

Haeundae Beach...twiced.

{me chowin' a north korean attack vessell!...jk.}
Headed back to Haeundae (heh-oon-deh) Beach this saturday in Busan. I have flickr pix up from last week, and I'll try to remember to post more this weekend. Just letting everyone know I'm doing great and I love you. Sorry I haven't called in a while. Call ya s–, ..well let's be honest, –eventually.

Today (Sunday, actually) Nate and I had a duck paddle boat race at Suseong Lake with our church – winners receive 1,000,000 won ('bout $900)...we came in dead last and received ice packs for our legs as a consolation prize. Anyway, Cory and our new found acquaintance, Mandy, and us Americanos decided to play a round of putt putt. The course was tattered and cheap. haha. But we still had fun.

Thing I Miss of the Week v.II

As I trek around the city and viddy the folks walking their pets I immediately notice how small these animals are. And they're not the usual cute small dogs, although I did notice a mini Yorkee not much bigger than my foot. That one was pretty cute, but most pet dogs here are small and ugly. But most importantly, I miss HUGE gorgeous dogs. I believe one reason why they are not so populous is that the city cannot wedge them in. There is also not much grass here for animals to play in, if any at all. The grass I have found is crispy and non-lush. Another reason may be that larger dogs are better to eat! Surely no one wants to eat a small dog – he would never fill you up. I haven't sampled a "doggie dinner" just yet, but I imagine it would be much more appetizing than a "doggie snack". So whatever the reason that there aren't many beefy canines trotting along with their best friend, I hope it diminishes or that I could at least find a few to throw a frisbee with or maybe throw the smaller dogs and use them as a chew toy for the larger. That seems more sensible..

I miss fireworks...

Soooo I guess some people are worrying about me over here since Captain Nimrod up in North Korea has been testing out his toys. Must be fun to have that much power in your pocket – I hear some guys do, but I wouldn't know.

Anyway, supposedly Cap'n Sassyrockets has been shooting off a few this week. I don't know how many or how far or how large...whatever. You probably know more than I do. Why? For 1, I don't watch TV here obviously (even though I have CNN). 2, I have friends here who would warn me about anything super serious. People here are more concerned with the recent suicide of ex-S.Korean president, Roh Moo-hyun, rather than fancy bottle rockets.

I miss bottle rockets. I remember times when I was a young lad and my father taught me how to light them from my hand. As far as I know, and as far as I'm concerned, I was in more danger then than I am now.

SO, perhaps I am the one who should be saving up the cash to fly you guys here?! Who knows. But seriously, I would assume that the Northerners have bigger fish to fry rather than poor lil' ol' Southerners. I feel I am the one who should be worried about YOU.

I love you all and miss you. I'll see you soon enough. Hakuna Matata.
Christine, I have a rock for you! ;D

NEW! "Thing I Miss" of the Week!

Ok so the past couple months I've realized that I actually do miss a few things from home. I have made a list of quite a few things that I miss, but I thought it'd be more fun to have a weekly "Thing that I miss". Here we go!

1. Taco Bell!
The infamous TB. Quesadillas, Enchiladas, Mexican Pizzas, Chicken Baja Gorditas, the list is almost endless of this fast food masterpiece corporation. This will be one of the first, if not THE first, places I will visit once I return home. "Yo Lo Quiero!"

Korean Catholic Fashion Show..?!

Say whaaa? Yeah, I went to a fashion show this past weekend. Never would I have guessed that a Catholic fashion show ever existed. Nor did I ever think that the first of which I would attend be in Korea. Pretty random, but ain't complainin'. Cory works in the admissions office at the Catholic University of Daegu (or CUD as I call it) and some of his students that he reps modeled for the fashion show with clothes designed by the students and alumni. Man, these designers are talented, gifted, and skilled – pretty creative stuff. My pix are pretty blurry and I can't upload them on flickr yet cuz I've already gone past my monthly limit of uploads – LAME, oh well.

Children's Day

Not Cinco de Mayo here. It's Children's Day in S.Korea. Not sure what that means, but Tipton and I got to celebrate it anyway with Cory's family by going up one of the mountains and cooking out and eating eating eating...and a bit of hiking. It was a lot of fun and very relaxing. The little girl's name is Hyoju, Cory's niece; English name: Alice. On Saturdays now, I teach her English for a couple hours for a bit of extra pay. Her brother's name is Sunghoon – He doesn't have an English name, but I gave him the name Clark since he loves Superman. You can catch a few pics in this batch of him in his superhero poses.

I also uploaded more pix that Cory the Clever Corean took along with some other pix we took in Busan:

Takin' A Stroll – vol.II

Downtown Daegu – Or "The [new] Dirty D" as Tip and I call it. You've seen some photos, now experience it in motion with Tipton and I just after we had recorded that last video. Again, this is on the eve of Buddha's birthday. Enjoy!

The Taxi-Derby & Tetraphobia

{No, this is actually a NYC cab. Korean cabs are silver or black, but I wanted to find a cool photo to mess with.}

I am convinced that Korean taxi drivers have a partnership with NASCAR or a local demolition derby... Next taxi I come across I will tag it with a large #4 on both sides.

And now it's time for "DID YOU KNOW?" with Brandon!:
"Hi kids! Did you know that the number 4 is considered an unlucky number here in Korea because it resembles the Chinese character that means "Death". Most hotels and other buildings change the #4 on their elevators to the letter "F" instead or just skip to the number "5". This is very similar to how some countries treat the number "13". I work on the "5th" floor of my building, however, we all know now what floor it REALLY is. Fear of the number 4 is called "Tetraphobia"."

And so brings us to my next point; BUCKLE UP... or just ride the subway.

That is all.

WKND

{I and a really cool Canadian, Adam}

What a pleasant weekend. A nice lil' weddin', and pretty much just chillin' and visiting my first Daegu English-speaking church, DongShin. It was a pretty good service. And how much more meaningful that my first church service here in Korea was an Easter service.

I'm getting a little more used to my job; the kids – as crazy and nuts as they are. I'm much more comfortable with the middle school kids although I still have a few that are difficult at times. But hey, they're kids – they can't help it much.

Also, anyhoo, I posted a couple new blog entries on my blog page of my website:

AND more random photos with new found friends on the flickr.

Soonyeong's Wedding

I got to experience my first Korean wedding, however, it was pretty similar to Western style weddings, so it wasn't a traditional Korean wedding I guess. It was my friend Cory's sister's wedding. His real name is Soonseong, her's is Soonyeong.

Doot doot doot doot --- UPDATE --- doot doot doot doot

Ok, so...A lot has happened so I'll try to fit in as much as I can into this post.

I arrived 8:15p in Daegu Sunday evening. They immediately took me to a motel because the guy I was replacing did not move out until Wednesday morning. The motel was good; big screen TV, computer, fridge, water, food, menu, couch, coffee table, robes, sandals, queen bed, phone, nightstand, fan, and just about every place around here has heated floors! We need that in the States. I haven't seen any carpeted places here either. haha. Anywho, the only downside of the motel was that it was a "love motel". I won't go into details..

You must remove your shoes before going to certain areas; homes, classrooms, more upscale restaurants...

I immediately had to go to the school Monday afternoon, although I was hoping they would give me time to rest a little more. Oh well. I'm fine. Monday all I did was sit in on classrooms with different teachers to see how the classes are done. They begin almost every class with exercise and meditation. It's pretty unique and I'm trying to get used to it. After meditation, the students must recall what they learned last class with their eyes closed, and speak aloud what is "painted on their brain screen". Then we dive into the lesson and we emphasize using imagery and speaking to learn and then writing. We end the class with a storybook usually and then with "Thank you English Power Brain. 1 2 3 YEAH!" ...interesting. And that's about it.

I've met a bunch of people already, mainly co-workers/teachers. They're all really laid back and fun and we've gone out to eat a few times already. Good people. Nice and interesting. My apartment is nice looking but very dirty from the last guy I replaced. He's South African, but white with a british/austrailian-type accent. Very cool guy. Kinda stinks that he left, and everyone here misses him. But I have LOTS of cleaning in my apartment to do; floors, bathroom, kitchen, everything! So black and dirty even if you can't see it at first...it's there. Yuck. It must be a South African thing to not clean...EVER. haha. I still have to finish unpacking as well. I went grocery shopping a couple nights ago and got some bare essentials and I'll probably do a little more this weekend.

Betty, a senior teacher here is going to take me Saturday downtown to get some art supplies so that I can start painting and drawing again. Maybe decorate my apartment a little with what I create and hopefully some time this year I'd like to have a number of pieces to enter into a gallery and get some foreign exposure. It will be really great to start networking with my artwork here. I am also looking to begin learning Korean probably through Rosetta®; an online language learning program. Should be efficient at this point. Who knows, after I leave next year maybe I'll live in a Korea-Town somewhere in the states, LA probably..? I dont know. We'll see.

So uh yeah, I guess I'm doing pretty well. Not really any problems or concerns thus far, so things are going great. Thanks everybody!

Love, BJ

Hey Everyone,
Just letting you all know I arrived in Daegu 8:15pm Sunday. I am 14 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time. Right now it is 7:15am Monday here. It is 5:15pm there. Thank you guys for all your prayers and support. I am staying in a motel for the next few days until the guy I'm replacing moves out of the apartment. Everything is so different here! But a lot of things are very much the same. I can't go into great detail right now because my battery is low on my laptop, but I will include more as the week goes. Thanks again everyone.

Thanks Everyone!

I am grateful to have seen those who came to my going-away party saturday. It was good to see old faces too. There was an amazing smorgasbord of food and silly st. patricks decorations thanks to Mum. It was more than what I expected and kind of embarrassing to be perfectly honest, but I'm thankful nonetheless. Thanks for all the encouragement and the support. I'll miss you guys. Cya next year!

P.S. If you have any photos of the party, please email some to me so that I can post them here for everyone to see who weren't there. Thanx!

So this is it!

Hello fam and amigos!

This will be my blog all year so that you can catch up on what I'm doing in Daegu, South Korea. I'll be posting photos via flikr.com, so all you'll have to do is click on a photo I've posted and get to see a whole gallery of photos on flikr that it will link you to. I'll try to post as much as I can - maybe a couple times a month at least.

At this moment I still don't have a departure date. I'm still waiting on my Visa number. I assume it will come in the next week. Once I get my Visa Number, I check in with the Korean Consulate in Chicago, then I believe I'm ready to go - A plane ticket waits for me at the airport.

I will not have my usual phone number, nor will I have a phone number there for some time I assume. We'll see how it goes. But every now and then I will call the family by a phone card so you can hear my angelic voice.

You have the capability on this blog to also comment on my posts so I expect a lot! Just click on the link that says "(#) COMMENTS" below each post.
You may have to sign up for an account to post a comment, I'm not sure.. If you have to but don't want to, just email me.

I also have a Myspace and a Facebook if you're registered on those sites.

Here is my email as well:
cpbuzzard8@hotmail.com

Hmm..I can't think of much else to say at the moment but I will update this post as I think of something..

I love you all. Take care and I miss you. God bless!
